Dales Lomas, Independent journalist & test driver/reviewer, set out to test the claim that the CG-Lock
really would provide the ultimate performance benefit… faster lap times.

The CG-Lock is a small, patented device that clips to the factory-installed seatbelt of most vehicles. The CG-Lock allows the lap belt portion to be tightened from gentle to extreme (similarly to the seatbelts in commercial aircraft). The shoulder belt portion is unaffected. Locking the lap belt provides about 80% of the control and feedback values of a full race harness. Using DRIFTBOX® GPS technology (www.driftbox.com; accurate to 0.01 second), Dale took a 2006 Golf GTI with paddle shift and a manual 2006 Subaru WRX STI (Spec-D) around the winding Bruntingthorpe circuit in England with and without the CG-Lock.

THE RESULTS: with the CG-Lock tightened, the laps were consistently faster by over 1.7 seconds with the Golf GTi and 0.6 seconds with the Subaru WRX over an average lap time of 1’43” and 1’37” respectively. This means that after 10 hot laps with a CG-Lock, one would gain 17 seconds in the Golf and 6 seconds in the Subaru over an identical car and driver. Because all other variables were kept constant, the improvement in lap times is 100% attributable to the CG-Lock
